Ship Visit Crystal Serenity: An exclusive look on board

I was invited to visit this ultra-luxury cruise ship: the Crystal Serenity. Back when I was working onboard the former Legend of the Seas (Royal Caribbean Cruise Line), I saw this ship many times and always wondered what life would be like onboard. Now, the time has come to step aboard myself, and I would love to share my thoughts and impressions of this luxury cruise line with you. One of my main questions today is: how does Crystal Cruises compare to Explora Journeys, a luxury line I have cruised with several times myself? It’s a fascinating matchup of modern, contemporary luxury versus authentic, classic cruise elegance.
Ship Visit Crystal Serenity: The Story Behind Crystal Cruises
To understand what makes Crystal Cruises so special, we have to take a quick look back in time. For decades, the name 'Crystal' has been synonymous with the absolute pinnacle of ultra-luxury cruising. Over the years, the cruise line built a massive following of loyal fans, purely driven by their unparalleled service. Following a turbulent period, the renowned A&K Travel Group (Abercrombie & Kent) acquired the brand. They invested in a multi-million-dollar renovation of the ships and breathed new life into this iconic cruise line.
Good to know: Although Crystal was also renowned for its award-winning river cruises in the past, these are no longer part of the company today. The focus of the 'new' Crystal lies entirely on delivering the ultimate luxury experience on the oceans.
The Crystal Cruises Fleet
While many modern cruise lines opt for ever-larger mega-ships, Crystal consciously keeps things intimate and exclusive. The current active fleet consists of two iconic sister ships:
Crystal Symphony (1995)
Crystal Serenity (2003)
Crystal Grace (2028)
In addition, the cruise line recently announced a major expansion of its fleet with the arrival of a brand-new ship, the Crystal Grace, which is scheduled to enter service in May 2028.
Space and Serenity Aboard Crystal Serenity
During the massive 2023 renovation, something truly unique was done to Crystal Serenity. While the ship previously accommodated over 1,000 guests, her capacity was consciously reduced to just 740 passengers. Many smaller staterooms were combined to create spacious, ultra-luxury suites. In October 2026, the Serenity will enter dry dock, where a new pool bar will be created near the swimming pool.
With an impressive 655 crew members onboard, the staff-to-guest ratio is nearly one-to-one. This immediately explains why the service here is so legendary; there is literally all the time and space needed to completely pamper every single passenger.
The Ship Visit
Upon arriving at the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal, we boarded this magnificent ship, which was staying in Rotterdam for two days. The first thing that stood out was the remarkable sense of space relative to the ship’s size. This is a place where you can truly unwind while being pampered from the moment you step on board.
What makes Crystal so exceptional is the intimate scale of the cruise line. Because the fleet consists of only a select number of ships, many guests return time and again, creating an unparalleled sense of community and familiarity. The crew quickly gets to know you by name and understands your personal preferences, ensuring highly attentive and personalized service.
Unlike many other ultra-luxury cruise lines, this ship offers a surprisingly wide variety of elegant lounges and an impressive selection of world-class entertainment.
A Variety of Elegant Lounges
Crystal Serenity offers an impressive collection of lounges, each with its own distinctive character. Whether you are looking for a lively social atmosphere, an intimate setting for conversation, or a peaceful retreat, there is always a venue perfectly suited to your mood.
The Avenue Saloon: The Avenue Saloon is the perfect destination for those who appreciate a classic, intimate ambiance. Rich wood paneling, comfortable leather armchairs, and live piano music in the evenings create an inviting setting for a perfectly crafted cocktail or a fine glass of whisky before dinner. As the evening unfolds, this elegant lounge becomes a vibrant and convivial gathering place.
The Palm Court: Is the ship's bright and elegant social hub. During the day, its floor-to-ceiling windows provide breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean, creating a serene and sophisticated atmosphere. It is also home to Crystal's renowned Afternoon Tea, an exquisitely refined experience that is not to be missed.
The Crystal Cove: Located in the heart of the ship's central atrium, Crystal Cove is the ideal place to meet and unwind. With its lively yet welcoming atmosphere and live musical performances, it is the perfect setting to enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif before heading to one of the ship's exceptional specialty restaurants.
World-Class Entertainment
One of the greatest surprises aboard Crystal is its exceptional entertainment programme. The variety of experiences on offer is remarkable, with every performance delivered to an outstanding standard.
The Elegant Monte Carlo Casino: For guests who appreciate both excitement and sophistication, the ship features a beautifully designed casino. Unlike the often bustling and noisy casinos found on larger vessels, the atmosphere here is refined, relaxed, and effortlessly elegant. Appropriately named the Monte Carlo Casino, after Monaco's world-famous gaming venue, it offers an exclusive setting where guests can enjoy blackjack, roulette, or a selection of modern slot machines, perfect for a stylish evening at sea.
The Iconic Show Lounges: The Galaxy Lounge is home to spectacular Broadway-calibre productions and dazzling revue performances, showcasing world-class talent in an elegant theatre setting. For a more intimate experience, the Stardust Club offers front-row proximity to the performers. Here, guests can enjoy live cabaret, jazz, and other musical performances in a sophisticated club atmosphere, complemented by attentive table service throughout the evening.
An Authentic Cinema Experience: A rare feature on a ship of this size, The Hollywood Theatre provides a true cinema experience at sea. Guests can enjoy a daily programme of recent releases alongside timeless film classics, all from the comfort of plush seating. Freshly popped popcorn completes the experience, making it the perfect place to relax after a day of exploration.
A Culinary Journey Around the World
The culinary experience aboard Crystal is nothing short of exceptional. The cruise line has deliberately curated an impressive collection of specialty restaurants, ensuring that each evening offers an entirely new gastronomic experience. From refined international cuisine to expertly crafted regional specialties, every venue is distinguished by impeccable service, elegant surroundings, and a commitment to culinary excellence.
Waterside Restaurant: Waterside is the ship's elegant main dining venue, offering a sophisticated culinary experience in a refined setting. Its menu changes daily, reflecting both the seasons and the destinations visited along the voyage. Guests can savour beautifully prepared international cuisine while enjoying Crystal's open-seating dining concept, allowing you to dine whenever you wish and with whomever you choose, without fixed dining times.
Umi Uma by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa: Without question, this is one of the true culinary highlights on board. Umi Uma is the only restaurant at sea created by legendary chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Here, guests are treated to his iconic Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine, featuring expertly crafted sushi and sashimi, alongside his world-famous Black Cod with Miso. It is an extraordinary dining experience that simply should not be missed.
Osteria d'Ovidio: For lovers of authentic Italian cuisine, Osteria d'Ovidio is an essential dining experience. Here, timeless Italian traditions are seamlessly combined with contemporary culinary techniques. From freshly made pasta to refined seafood and expertly prepared meat dishes, every course celebrates the rich flavours of Italy.
The Vintage Room: For the ultimate gourmet experience, Crystal offers an exclusive wine-pairing dinner in the intimate setting of The Vintage Room. Exceptional wines, including rare and prestigious vintages, are expertly paired with a specially curated multi-course tasting menu, creating an unforgettable evening for discerning food and wine enthusiasts.
Trident Grill: Located on the pool deck, Trident Grill is the perfect spot for a relaxed al fresco lunch. Renowned for its freshly prepared gourmet burgers, premium hot dogs, wraps, and crispy fries, it offers casual dining without compromising on quality, all served in a laid-back atmosphere with beautiful ocean views.
The Marketplace: During the day, The Marketplace is a bright and inviting buffet restaurant featuring live cooking stations and an ever-changing selection of international cuisine. In the evening, the venue transforms into a vibrant Brazilian Churrascaria, where expertly grilled cuts of meat are carved directly at your table from traditional skewers, delivering an authentic and memorable dining experience.
To preserve the exclusivity and intimate atmosphere of its specialty restaurants, Crystal follows a clear reservation policy, with most dining experiences included in your cruise fare.
Included Specialty Dining: On a seven-night voyage, guests are entitled to one complimentary dinner per person at both Umi Uma by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Osteria d'Ovidio. On longer voyages, additional complimentary reservations are available, allowing guests to enjoy these exceptional restaurants more than once.
Additional Reservations: Should you wish to dine at either restaurant again during your cruise, additional reservations can be made on board, subject to availability, for a supplement of USD 75 per person. As Crystal is an all-inclusive cruise line, this fee also includes a carefully selected wine pairing. The Vintage Room is one of the few experiences on board that carries an additional charge. Guests can enjoy an exclusive multi-course wine-pairing dinner featuring premium and rare vintages for approximately USD 200–300 per person, depending on the wines selected.
What Stood Out to Me
One of the first things that caught my attention was the ship's authentic teak decking. While many modern cruise ships have replaced traditional wood with synthetic materials, Crystal Serenity has retained genuine wooden decks, adding to its timeless maritime character. Combined with the full wraparound promenade deck, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a morning run.
Another feature I particularly appreciated was the thoughtful design of the outdoor spaces. At the aft of each passenger deck, you'll find comfortable sun loungers in peaceful surroundings. If you prefer to relax in the sun or enjoy a good book without the lively atmosphere of the pool deck, you can simply step out from your suite and make your way to one of these tranquil outdoor retreats. It is the perfect place to unwind in complete privacy while enjoying the fresh sea air.
Having previously sailed with Explora Journeys, I immediately noticed the fascinating contrasts between the two cruise lines. Although both operate in the highest tier of luxury cruising and deliver an equally exceptional standard of service, their personalities are distinctly different. Crystal embraces a timeless, classic maritime elegance, while Explora Journeys offers the sleek, contemporary feel of a sophisticated cosmopolitan boutique hotel. Neither approach is better than the other, it simply depends on the style of luxury you prefer.
