Cruise Bucket List Destinations: Must-Visit Ports Around the World

Updated: 3 days ago
Cruising brings you the incredible magic of waking up every morning watching a new horizon. Whether it is a volcanic landscapes, rich ancient history, or untouched tropical beaches, certain destinations deserve a spot on every traveler's bucket list.
Having cruised through a large part of the world, I want to share the destinations and ports that have made the biggest impression on me, as well as the places that are still on my bucket list. In this guide, you’ll discover why each destination earned its place on my cruise bucket list, along with my personal experiences and tips to help you make the most of your time in each port.
My cruise bucket list destinations
Northern Europe & Iceland (For Fjords & Wild Nature)
Reykjavik, Iceland
The perfect gateway to Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, with geysers, waterfalls, volcanic scenery, and geothermal hot springs all within easy reach. One of the most popular excursions from Reykjavik is the Golden Circle, taking you past some of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders or relax at the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon and enjoy Iceland’s geothermal waters.
Geiranger, Norway
Sailing through the narrow, steep-sided fjords is one of Norway’s most unforgettable experiences. As the cruise ship makes its way towards Geiranger, you pass the spectacular Seven Sisters, seven waterfalls cascading down the mountainside. Surrounded by cliffs, deep blue waters, and waterfalls, the journey into Geiranger is a truly breathtaking bucket-list experience.
I had my first experience of Geiranger when I had just started working as Cruise Staff. I remember having pier duty, helping guests get ready for their shore excursions, while being surrounded by magical views all around me. It was one of those moments when I realized just how special it is to experience this port.

Copenhagen, Denmark
This capitol combines colorful architecture, historic charm, and a relaxed atmosphere. Explore Nyhavn harbor, visit the magical Tivoli Gardens, enjoy the city’s excellent shopping and culinary scene, and don’t miss The Little Mermaid by the waterfront.
I’ve had the chance to experience all of these highlights myself, and what makes Copenhagen so memorable is how much the city has to offer. Whether you’re exploring its historic streets, enjoying the food, or simply taking in the atmosphere, there is always something new to discover.
Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm is spread across 14 islands and surrounded by a spectacular archipelago of thousands of islands. Arriving by cruise ship through this maze of islands is an unforgettable and picture-perfect experience.
Once in the city, explore the Royal Palace, take a walk through the historic Old Town, visit the warship Vasa at the Museum, and discover the world of ABBA at ABBA The Museum.
I explored Stockholm by bike, cycling around the city to reach the amusement park and ABBA The Museum, which were across the water from where our cruise ship was docked. It was a fun way to see more of the city and experience Stockholm beyond the usual cruise-port highlights.
The Mediterranean (For History, Culture & Charm)
Civitavecchia / Rome, Italy
Rome feels like an open-air museum, where history is around every corner. One day is simply not enough to experience the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, and all the other iconic sights. The cruise port of Civitavecchia is around 80 km from Rome, visiting this city takes some planning.
I’ve been to Rome many times, and somehow the city never gets boring. If you’re visiting Rome on your own during a cruise port day, make sure to book your tickets in advance, especially for popular attractions such as the Vatican Museums. This can save you valuable time and help you make the most of the few hours you have in port.
If it’s your first time in Rome and you want to see as much as possible, I would prioritize the Colosseum and the Vatican. And if your cruise begins or ends in Civitavecchia, consider adding a few extra days before or after your cruise. That way, you can experience Rome at a much more relaxed pace instead of trying to fit this incredible city into just one cruise day. We stayed at hotel Umilta 36 it is located in the centre 5 minutes walking from the Panteon.

Venice, Italy
Venice is one of those cities that never gets old. My husband is from Venice, so I’ve had the chance to visit the city many times, and it remains one of my favorite places to explore. With its canals, historic buildings, beautiful squares, and unique atmosphere, there is always something new to discover.
If you’re arriving by plane, one of my favorite tips is to take a water taxi from Venice Marco Polo Airport directly to your hotel. It may be a little more expensive than other options, but the experience is absolutely worth it. As you make your way across the lagoon, you get your first views of Venice from the water, and it is a fantastic way to start your trip in style.
We stayed at the NH Collection Palazzo dei Dogi, located in a quieter part of Venice. It was a lovely place to stay, away from some of the busiest areas while still being within easy reach of the main sights.
Of course, don’t miss St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge, and the many beautiful canals and narrow streets around the city. Take a gondola ride, enjoy a traditional Italian meal, or simply get lost in the streets and see where they take you. If you have more time, the nearby islands of Murano and Burano are also worth visiting.
Venice is also a fantastic starting point for a cruise. If you are sailing from the Fusina Cruise Terminal, I would recommend taking a water taxi directly to the terminal. It is a convenient and memorable way to travel from Venice to your cruise ship, and arriving by boat makes the start of your cruise feel extra special.
Large cruise ships no longer sail through the historic center of Venice, but that certainly doesn’t make the city any less special for cruise travelers. Whether you visit before or after your cruise, Venice is a destination I would highly recommend and definitely one that deserves a place on any cruise bucket list.
Piraeus / Athens, Greece
From the port of Piraeus, Athens is just 30 minutes away. Don’t miss the iconic Acropolis and ancient Parthenon, and take some time to walk through the historic streets of Plaka. The impressive Parliament building in the heart of the city is also worth visiting.
We had a fantastic dinner at Geco and stayed overnight at the boutique Gatsby Athens in the city center. It was a beautiful and stylish place to stay. During the day, temperatures reached 38°C, so we decided to explore the Acropolis in the evening instead. From Plaka, you can easily walk uphill towards the Acropolis.
Since Piraeus is a common embarkation and disembarkation port for cruises, it’s the perfect opportunity to add an extra night in Athens and experience more of this incredible city beyond the usual cruise-day highlights.

Mykonos, Greece
Take a walk through the narrow streets of Mykonos Town, where you’ll find cute little shops, hidden corners, and beautiful whitewashed buildings around every turn. Don’t forget to stop by the waterfront and take some pictures with the iconic windmills and colorful boats in the background. Mykonos is one of those places that feels almost too beautiful to be real.
I stayed overnight in Mykonos while cruising on Explora I, and we arrived by tender at this lovely port. Staying overnight gave me the chance to experience Mykonos after the daytime crowds had left and enjoy the island at a more relaxed pace.

Barcelona, Spain
One of Europe’s most popular cruise destinations, Barcelona is the perfect combination of culture, architecture, food, and Mediterranean atmosphere. Explore Antoni Gaudi’s architectural masterpieces, including the breathtaking Sagrada Familia, and walk along La Rambla before discovering the city’s beautiful streets and lively neighborhoods.
If you have time before or after your cruise, consider staying an extra night or two to experience the city at a more relaxed pace. There are some beautiful hotels to choose from, including The Cotton House Hotel and the boutique Hotel Ohla Eixample, both perfectly located for exploring the city.
Whenever we visit Barcelona, we always make time for a long tapas lunch or dinner. And if there is one attraction you shouldn’t miss, it’s the Sagrada Familia. Seeing Gaudi’s incredible masterpiece in person is an experience that truly stays with you. I’ve stayed several times at the boutique hotel Ohla Eixample, which is perfectly located just around the corner from La Rambla. The hotel has beautifully decorated rooms and a lovely restaurant, making it a great place to stay when exploring Barcelona.
Kotor, Montenegro
Sailing into the Bay of Kotor feels like navigating a fjord in Southern Europe, the breathtaking view and approaching the medieval town of Kotor waiting at the end of the bay is fantastic.
Head out early in the morning, to hike up to San Giovanni Fortress for spectacular views over the bay, the old town, and your cruise ship below. Visit the ancient city walls and narrow, winding streets of Kotor. And don’t forget to look out for the city’s famous residents, its countless friendly cats! It reminds me a bit of Dubrovnik with the wall.
We arrived in Kotor by tender, and as soon as you reach the pier, you are right in the heart of the historic town. The ancient stone buildings, and, of course, the many friendly cats are all waiting to welcome you.
When I cruised on Explora I, we watched the sailaway from the ship, surrounded by the spectacular mountains of the Bay of Kotor. Sailing away through the bay, with towering mountains rising all around you, is definitely an experience not to be missed.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
This historic city is surrounded by impressive medieval walls, offering panoramic views over the Old Town and the sparkling Adriatic Sea. Wander through the ancient streets and discover the iconic locations used as filming locations for Game of Thrones. With its medieval architecture, rich history, and beautiful coastal setting, Dubrovnik feels like stepping into another world.
When I visited Dubrovnik for the first time, we were the only cruise ship tendering to the small pier, which meant we arrived right in the heart of the Old Town. On my other visits, the ship docked in the port near the bridge, from where buses take you into the city. The arrival can therefore feel quite different depending on where your cruise ship docks, so it’s worth checking this before planning your day.

The Caribbean (For Beaches & Private Islands)
Philipsburg, St. Maarten
Home to the famous Maho Beach, where planes land right over the sand, combined with a vibrant boardwalk.
A paradise for snorkelers and nature lovers, surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. Head out to Blue Channel, a spectacular reef channel known for its coral formations, swim-throughs, and abundant marine life.
We booked a private boat tour ourselves, including a snorkeling stop at Blue Channel. It was a fantastic way to explore the reef at our own pace and experience Roatan from the water. For anyone who loves snorkeling, Roatan is a true Caribbean bucket-list destination.
Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel is the perfect combination of a relaxing beach day and adventure. We’ve spent many days at Buccanos, where you can combine snorkeling and swimming with great food and a refreshing pool. It’s also a great option for families with children.
For a different perspective of the island, rent a convertible and drive around Cozumel at your own pace, stopping at beaches, viewpoints, and local spots along the way. For the more adventurous, there are plenty of activities to choose from, including skydiving.
Private Islands (Perfect Day at CocoCay or Great Stirrup Cay)
The ultimate extension of your cruise: step off the ship and onto your own private island paradise. Spend the day relaxing on white-sand beaches and swimming in crystal-clear water, or rent a luxury cabana, visit the huge waterparks, try thrilling slides and zip lines, or enjoy one of the many activities on offer. Whether you choose to completely relax or spend the day chasing adrenaline, these private islands offer a unique cruise experience where the ship and the island become part of the same vacation.
On our inaugural cruise on Norwegian Prima, we visited Great Stirrup Cay and spent the day in a private cabana. Having your own space to relax, with everything you need close by, gives you a completely different island experience. For us, it was the perfect way to slow down and enjoy a peaceful day away from the ship.
Oranjestad, Aruba
Known for its pastel-colored architecture, Dutch Caribbean charm, and constant trade winds, Aruba is the perfect destination for a classic Caribbean beach escape. Explore the lively streets of Oranjestad before heading to the island’s famous white-sand beaches, including the spectacular Eagle Beach. With its crystal-clear turquoise water and soft white sand, it’s easy to see why Aruba is such a popular Caribbean getaway.
I haven’t visited Aruba by cruise ship yet, but I’ve experienced the island during a hotel stay in Palm Beach. Spending several days on the island gave me the chance to enjoy the beautiful beaches, explore more of Aruba, and experience the relaxed island atmosphere at a slower pace.
St. Barths (Gustavia)
Pure French Riviera glamour in the Caribbean. St. Barths is a jet-set island known for its red-roofed villas, designer boutiques, upscale beach clubs, and beautiful turquoise bays. With its sophisticated atmosphere and unmistakable French flair, St. Barths offers a very different side of the Caribbean.
Saint Lucia (Pitons & Soufrière)
Dramatic, emerald-green volcanic peaks rising from the Caribbean Sea, the iconic Pitons are the centerpiece of Saint Lucia’s breathtaking landscape. Explore the lush surroundings of Soufrière, with tropical rainforest, waterfalls, volcanic scenery, and spectacular views at every turn.
Perfect for travelers looking for dramatic tropical nature and unforgettable landscapes rather than just another commercial cruise port. Saint Lucia is one of those destinations where the scenery alone makes it truly bucket-list worthy.
Asia & Beyond (For Exotic & Cultural Adventures)
Yokohama / Tokyo, Japan
Seamless access to one of the most futuristic yet traditional cities in the world, often featuring views of Mount Fuji as you sail out.
Singapore
The premier luxury gateway to Southeast Asia, Singapore is a fascinating mix of futuristic architecture, lush green spaces, world-class food, and different cultures. Don’t miss the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel, if you have the chance to stay here, it is absolutely amazing and visit the spectacular Gardens by the Bay, and the lively streets of Orchard Road and Clarke Quay.
I’ve never visited Singapore by cruise ship, but I spent five days here after arriving by plane, which gave me plenty of time to explore the city at a relaxed pace. Singapore is one of my favorite places in Asia. It feels incredibly modern, clean, and well organized, while still offering plenty of culture, history, and local character. The people are incredibly kind, the food is fantastic, and there is always something new to discover.
With its impressive skyline, amazing food, and endless sights and experiences, Singapore is a destination that definitely deserves a place on a cruise bucket list.
Bali (Benoa) & Lombok, Indonesia
The cultural and spiritual heart of Indonesia. Pristine beaches, sacred cliffside temples, and lush emerald rice terraces right on your doorstep.
Komodo Island, Indonesia (Expedition Pick)
A true bucket-list stop within a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its prehistoric Komodo dragons, dramatic savannah landscapes, and the iconic Pink Beach.
Alaska (For Glaciers, Wildlife & Wilderness)
Glacier Bay National Park (Scenic Cruising)
One of the most spectacular scenic cruising experiences in Alaska. Sail through icy blue waters surrounded by mountains and glaciers, where you may spot enormous chunks of ice calving into the sea. Keep your eyes open for humpback whales, bald eagles, sea otters, and other wildlife along the way.
There is something truly magical about experiencing Glacier Bay from the deck of a cruise ship. The combination of dramatic scenery, incredible glaciers, and the chance to see wildlife in its natural habitat makes this an unforgettable experience.
Juneau, Alaska
A fantastic base for exploring Alaska’s glaciers, wildlife, and wilderness. Visit the spectacular Mendenhall Glacier, go whale watching, hike through the surrounding mountains, or go to Mount Roberts for incredible views over Juneau. There are plenty of excursions to choose from, including hiking, glacier tours, whale watching, and even bear watching.
I’ve had the chance to experience Juneau in a very special way. I once took a helicopter to a glacier, where I helped with a wedding ceremony. Landing on a glacier surrounded by Alaska’s incredible scenery was an unforgettable experience.
Whether you’re looking for adventure, wildlife, or breathtaking scenery, Juneau is a cruise port that offers something for everyone.
Skagway, Alaska
Step straight into the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush in Skagway, a historic town that feels like stepping back in time. Wander along the old wooden streets lined with historic buildings, local shops, lively bars, and classic saloons, or stop for a drink and a game of pool.
One of the highlights is the famous White Pass & Yukon Route Railway, which departs from the historic station in town and takes you through spectacular mountain scenery along the route once used by gold prospectors. For those looking for more adventure, there are also fantastic hiking trails and excursions to explore the surrounding wilderness.
Skagway is one of the most memorable cruise ports for me in Alaska. Between the historic streets, the old railway station, and the dramatic journey through the mountains, you really get the feeling that you’ve travelled back to the days of the Gold Rush.
Hawaii & French Polynesia (For Tropical Paradise & Island Hopping)
Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Sailing into the breathtaking lagoon of Bora Bora, surrounded by volcanic peaks, crystal-clear turquoise water, and iconic overwater bungalows, feels like entering another world. If you have the chance to visit French Polynesia, Bora Bora is truly a dream destination and for me, it was an absolute bucket-list dream.
I’ve never seen water as incredibly blue as I did in Bora Bora. The color of the lagoon is simply unforgettable, and seeing the island from the water makes the experience even more magical.
One of my most memorable experiences was swimming with reef sharks. They may be smaller than the sharks you see in movies, but when you’re in the water with them, they certainly don’t look small! It was definitely a little scary at first but it was an incredible experience and one I will never forget.

Honolulu
The vibrant capital of Hawaii, where Polynesian heritage meets modern Hawaiian culture. Honolulu combines a lively city atmosphere with beautiful beaches, green mountains, and some of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks. Explore Pearl Harbor, visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, relax on the iconic Waikiki Beach, or hike up Diamond Head for spectacular views over the city and coastline.
I’ve visited both Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center, and both gave me a deeper appreciation of Hawaii’s history and culture. What I love about Honolulu is the contrast between the city’s impressive skyline and the dramatic green nature surrounding it.
Our ship usually docked at Aloha Tower, right in the heart of Honolulu. We often had an evening departure from this port, which made for a lovely way to end the day. After exploring the island, we could enjoy a nice sushi dinner on board while watching Honolulu disappear behind us as the ship sailed into the evening.
Honolulu is a fantastic combination of culture, history, beaches, and nature and arriving and sailing away from Aloha Tower makes it a particularly memorable cruise port.

Maui, Hawaii
Maui combines spectacular natural beauty with unforgettable experiences, from the volcanic landscape of Haleakalā to rainforests, waterfalls, beautiful beaches, and the famous Road to Hana.
Lahaina used to be my favorite cruise port and was one of the places I was always excited to return to. I had many overnight stays here on the old Legend of the Seas, which gave us plenty of time to enjoy the island. Front Street was just around the corner from where the tender used to dock, with plenty of restaurants, shops, and a lively atmosphere. A short drive away, Whalers Village was also worth a visit.
Maui has given me some unforgettable memories. We once drove around the island on rented Harley-Davidsons, watched surfers along the North Shore, and even made the trip up to the summit of Haleakalā to watch the sunrise. I still remember how incredibly cold it was at the top!

Sadly, Lahaina was devastated by the wildfires in 2023, and the town I remember is no longer the same. It makes these memories even more special and is one of the reasons Maui will always have a place on my cruise bucket list.
There is simply so much to discover on Maui, from dramatic volcanic landscapes and tropical nature to beautiful beaches and unforgettable road trips. It’s an island that offers something for everyone and one of the destinations I would love to experience again.
Nāwiliwili (Kauai), Hawaii
Kauai is a paradise for nature lovers, with green mountains and valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in Hawaii. Don’t miss the towering cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast and the spectacular Waimea Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”
One of my most unforgettable experiences on Kauai was taking a helicopter tour over the island. Flying over the landscape and into the crater of an old volcano gave us breathtaking views that you simply cannot experience from the ground. With countless hiking trails and spectacular scenery around almost every corner, Kauai is a destination where nature truly takes center stage.
For me, Kauai is one of those places where the scenery alone makes it worthy of a spot on any cruise bucket list.

Australia & New Zealand (For Fjords, Coastal Cities & Wildlife)
Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
One of the world’s most spectacular scenic cruising experiences, Fiordland National Park is a breathtaking landscape of towering mountains, dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and untouched rainforest.
Cruising through Fiordland can take you through three spectacular sounds: Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and Dusky Sound, each offering its own incredible scenery. In many ways, the experience reminded me of sailing through the Norwegian fjords, with mountains rising from the water and waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. The difference is that Fiordland feels incredibly wild, remote, and covered in lush green rainforest.
When I was working onboard, we operated two-week cruises from Sydney to Auckland and back, and we passed through these spectacular sounds many times. Seeing Fiordland from the ship again and again never made it feel less impressive. Depending on the weather and light, the landscape could look completely different each time.
For me, this is what makes Fiordland truly bucket-list worthy. You cruise for hours through an enormous, untouched wilderness. It is one of those cruise experiences where the journey itself becomes the destination.
Sydney, Australia
Sydney has so much to offer beyond its famous harbor. Spend a day at Manly Beach or Bondi Beach, enjoy the views from the Sydney Tower Eye, or head to Darling Harbour for its restaurants, bars, and lively atmosphere.
I’ve experienced all of these highlights myself, but one of my favorite memories was climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The views over the harbor and the city are spectacular, and standing high above the water is an experience I will never forget.
Sailing past the iconic Sydney Opera House and underneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the most memorable sail-away experiences in the world. Watching the bridge getting closer from the open decks is simply amazing. As the ship approaches, you almost start wondering if a cruise ship can really fit underneath it.
For cruise lovers, Sydney is a true bucket-list destination especially when you get to experience that unforgettable sail-away beneath the Harbour Bridge.

Melbourne, Australia
Australia’s vibrant cultural and culinary capital, Melbourne is famous for its hidden laneways filled with specialty coffee shops, restaurants, and colorful street art. Explore the city by its iconic historic trams and discover its lively neighborhoods.
One of the places I visited many times during my time in Melbourne was St Kilda, a lively seaside suburb with a beautiful beach, restaurants, cafés, and a relaxed atmosphere. It was always a great place to spend some time away from the busy city center and enjoy the waterfront.
Melbourne is a destination that combines culture, food, art, and coastal experiences, making it a great addition to any Australian cruise itinerary.
Hobart (Tasmanië), Australia
Hobart is the gateway to Tasmania, an island known for its dramatic landscapes, fascinating history, and unique wildlife. Explore the historic Port Arthur and wander through the lively Salamanca Place markets, or visit the world-renowned MONA museum.
One of my favorite experiences in Hobart was visiting Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. It was the first time I had the chance to see kangaroos, koalas, and a Tasmanian devil up close, and even hand-feed the kangaroos. Seeing these unique Australian animals in person was an unforgettable experience and something I would definitely recommend when visiting Tasmania.
We often had late-night sailings from Hobart, which gave us plenty of time to enjoy the port. Dinner was almost a tradition, and Ball & Chain Grill was a popular choice, as it was conveniently located close to the ship. After a day of exploring, it was the perfect place to enjoy dinner before heading back on board.
Hobart offers a wonderful mix of history, culture, nature, and unique wildlife, making it a memorable cruise destination.
Napier, New Zealand
Known as the Art Deco capital of the world, Napier was rebuilt in the distinctive style of the 1930s after a devastating earthquake in 1931. Today, its beautiful Art Deco architecture gives the city a unique character and makes simply walking through the streets an experience in itself.
Napier is also the gateway to the famous Hawke’s Bay wine region, so a wine tasting tour is a must when visiting this port. I’ve done a winery tour myself and really enjoyed discovering the local wines and beautiful countryside.
For a completely different experience, I also visited a local farm and learned how sheep are sheared. It was a fun and very hands-on experience and gave me a glimpse into an important part of life in rural New Zealand.
I also have some unforgettable memories of sailing around New Zealand. We experienced some very rough seas, when leaving from this port. I still remember one particular evening when the ship was moving so much that plates started sliding off the tables in the Windjammer. I had never seen the ship so empty in the evening, almost everyone had decided that staying in their cabin was the safest and most comfortable option! It was one of those moments you never forget when you work at sea.
For me, Napier is a great cruise destination because you can combine beautiful architecture, excellent wine, and authentic New Zealand experiences, while also having plenty of stories to remember from the journey there.
Tauranga (Bay of Plenty), New Zealand
Located at the foot of Mount Maunganui, Tauranga is a beautiful cruise port where you can combine a relaxed day by the beach with some truly adventurous experiences. Take a walk through the town, stop for a coffee, relax at the Mount Hot Pools, or enjoy the beautiful beach and views around Mauao.
For a different experience, take a tour to Rotorua, famous for its volcanic landscapes, geothermal hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and Māori culture. It’s a fascinating place to explore and offers a completely different side of New Zealand.
But my most memorable experience in Tauranga was something much more adventurous. Together with a few crewmembers from the ship, we decided to go skydiving. Jumping out of a plane over the beautiful Bay of Plenty was an incredible experience and definitely not something I will ever forget!
Tauranga is one of those ports where you can have a relaxing day, explore New Zealand’s geothermal wonders, or create an unforgettable adventure of your own.

South America, Patagonia & Galapagos
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Sailing into Guanabara Bay past Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer offers one of the most iconic harbor views in the world. I’ve visited Rio a couple of times while arriving or departing on a cruise ship, and the view from the water never gets old.
Rio has so much to offer, from its famous beaches and spectacular viewpoints to its lively atmosphere and incredible scenery. However, it is also important to be aware of your surroundings, as some parts of the city can be unsafe for visitors. For that reason, I would recommend exploring the main sights with an organized tour, especially if it is your first visit.
One of the highlights is taking the small cog railway up Corcovado Mountain to Christ the Redeemer. The train ride itself is an experience, winding through the lush rainforest as you climb higher up the mountain. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with spectacular views over Rio, Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the surrounding coastline.
And of course, no visit to Rio would be complete without seeing the famous Copacabana Beach. Whether you explore the city by land or simply sail past it on your cruise ship, Rio de Janeiro is one of those destinations that deserves a place on any cruise bucket list.
Cape Horn, Chile (Scenic Cruising)
Sailing around Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America, is one of the most legendary passages in maritime history. Located where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, Cape Horn has long been associated with some of the world’s most challenging and dramatic sea journeys.
Experiencing Cape Horn from a cruise ship gives you a real sense of the power and remoteness of the Southern Ocean. Depending on the weather and sea conditions, you may get the chance to see the famous Cape Horn lighthouse and monument marking this historic point.
For cruise lovers, sailing around Cape Horn is more than just another scenic cruising experience. You are following a route that has challenged sailors for centuries, making it a truly special addition to any cruise bucket list.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Known as the tango capital of the world, Buenos Aires is a vibrant city filled with European-inspired architecture, grand boulevards, historic neighborhoods, and an incredible food scene. From the colorful streets of La Boca and the cobblestone streets of San Telmo to the elegant Recoleta neighborhood, there is plenty to discover.
Don’t miss the chance to experience a traditional tango show, explore the city’s historic streets, and enjoy some of Argentina’s famous steaks paired with a glass of local wine. Buenos Aires has a unique atmosphere that combines European influences with unmistakably Argentine culture.
For cruise travelers, Buenos Aires is also a great place to start or end a South American cruise. With its fascinating history, vibrant culture, fantastic food, and legendary tango, it definitely deserves a place on any cruise bucket list.
Galapagos Islands (Ecuador)
A true dream destination for wildlife lovers, the Galápagos Islands are famous for their unique animals and incredible landscapes. Giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, sea lions, marine iguanas, and many other species can be seen up close in their natural environment.
The best way to explore the islands is on a small expedition cruise, allowing you to visit different islands while getting close to the wildlife and experiencing the remote beauty of the Galápagos. With guided shore excursions, snorkeling, and wildlife encounters, every day offers something completely different.
Exploring the islands by expedition ship and seeing these remarkable animals up close would be an incredible addition to my cruise adventures.
Antarctica & Expedition Cruising (For the Ultimate Frontier)
Antarctica is the ultimate frontier for adventure and one of the most remote places on Earth. Imagine sailing through icy waters surrounded by towering icebergs, stepping ashore by Zodiac boat, and watching penguins and seals in their natural environment.
An expedition cruise to Antarctica is the combination of untouched landscapes, incredible wildlife, and the feeling of being so far from the rest of the world makes this one of the ultimate cruise adventures.
Some of the best ports are not yet any longer cruise ports
Some destinations have left a lasting impression on me, even though they are no longer regular cruise ports. Two of the most memorable are Lahaina, Maui, and St. Petersburg, Russia. Both offered unique experiences that I was lucky enough to enjoy during my years of cruising.
Lahaina, Maui
Lahaina was one of those cruise ports where we often stayed overnight, giving us plenty of time to explore the town and enjoy its relaxed island atmosphere. Much of the town was centered around Front Street, with its restaurants, shops, and beautiful waterfront setting. Just a short drive away, Whalers Village offered even more shops, restaurants, and places to enjoy the island.
Sadly, Lahaina was devastated by the devastating wildfires in 2023. Seeing photos of the destruction is difficult when you remember how vibrant and beautiful the town once was. I feel very fortunate to have experienced Lahaina during its time as a cruise destination and to have memories of what made this place so special.
St. Petersburg, Russia
St. Petersburg was another unforgettable cruise destination, and we often had overnight stays here as well. Having more than one day allowed us to experience much more of this spectacular city, from the magnificent Hermitage Museum and grand historic buildings to exploring the city’s canals by boat.
The combination of incredible architecture, fascinating history, beautiful waterways, and the opportunity to stay overnight made St. Petersburg one of the most memorable ports I experienced during my cruising career.
These are destinations that remind me that cruising is not only about where you can go today, but also about the special places and experiences that stay with you long after the ship has sailed.
