Anyone who has cruised with Royal Caribbean on their largest ships knows there is a garden at sea where you can get completely zen. It’s called Central Park, and when you book the neighborhood cabin, they offer a stunning view of this amazing green oasis.

The History: How Royal Caribbean Brought the Outdoors to the Ocean

When Royal Caribbean first announced "Project Genesis" (the developmental code name for the Oasis-class ships) in the mid-2000s, critics were skeptical. The plan was to build the largest cruise ships in human history. But a massive ship created a massive problem: how do you make the interior of a giant metal vessel feel bright, open, and inviting, rather than dark and claustrophobic?

Their revolutionary solution was to literally split the superstructure down the middle, opening up the core of the ship to the sky and creating Central Park.

Central Park officially made its debut in December 2009 on the historic Oasis of the Seas. It was the first time a real, living park with actual soil and thousands of plants was successfully integrated onto a cruise ship.

Designing a living ecosystem that could withstand salt air, moving steel, and wind was no cheap feat, the park alone cost roughly $25 million to design and build.

Luxury shops like Bulgari and Cartier are also located right in the park.

Because passengers absolutely loved the concept, Royal Caribbean made Central Park a signature staple. Today, you can stroll through this green haven on:

How to keep 20.000 Plants Alive on Saltwater

To build a thriving, living forest in the middle of a steel ship sailing at 22 knots, Royal Caribbean had to solve some massive scientific and structural problems:

• 82 Tons of Real Soil: They didn't use fake dirt or plastic turf. Central Park features massive, custom-engineered drainage beds filled with over 82 metric tons of nutrient-rich soil.

• A "Wind Deflector" Design: You’d think the wind would rip the leaves off the trees at sea. However, the ship’s aerodynamics are built like a canyon. The wind is forced over the top of the open atrium rather than down into it, creating a calm, breezy microclimate.

• The Morning "Salt-Wash" routine: Even with Wind deflectors, salt mist still settles on the leaves. To preventing the salt from dehydrating the foliage, the horticulturist manually spray down the plants with fresh water in the early hours of the morning, washing the salt away before the hot sun hits.

• The "Luggage" Puzzle (Craning the Trees): Before a ship sails for the first time, massive mature trees (some up to 22 feet tall!) are craned directly into the ship's center while it is still in the dry dock.

• Modular Living Walls: The towering green walls aren't just climbed by ivy; they are built from thousands of individual aluminum pockets packed with sub-tropical plants.

• An Eco-Friendly "No Pesticide" Policy: Royal Caribbean has a strict zero-tolerance policy for chemical pesticides. To control pests naturally, they rely on natural "stowaways", small lizards, frogs, and birds that find their way into the park and act as organic biocontrol.

• The Dream Team: The park has its own dedicated on-board crew of 3 to 4 professional horticulturists who monitor soil pH, irrigation, and prune the plants 24/7.

What Kind of Plants are in Central Park?

Because the park experiences a mix of intense tropical sun, deep shade (from the towering ship walls), and salty ocean air, the botanists had to choose incredibly hardy, sub-tropical, and coastal species.

The park contains over 10.000 to 20.000 plants representing more than 100 different species.

• The Canopy (Trees & Palms)

• Black Olive Trees (Bucida buceras): Known for their wind resistance and beautiful, layered canopy that filters the sunlight.

• Ficus Trees: Highly adaptable trees that provide a lush, dense forest feel.

• Sago and Date Palms: Adding that classic tropical, resort-like holiday vibe.

• The Understory (Lush Shaded Foliage)

• Crotons: Famous for their bright, fiery yellow, red, and orange leaves that add pops of color among the deep green.

• Boston Ferns & Autumn Ferns: These line the pathways and thrive in the shady microclimates created by the cabin decks above.

• Peace Lilies (Spathiphyllum): Providing beautiful, minimalist white blooms that love the humid, shaded environments.

• Schefflera (Umbrella Plants): Tough, leafy plants that form a dense, rich backdrop along the walking paths.

What Activities to Do in Central Park

While you won't find water slides or surf simulators here, Central Park offers a completely different, sophisticated pace. It is the ultimate retreat for those looking to unwind, relax, and enjoy a more zen cruise experience:

• Morning Yoga & Stretch: Start your day in the ultimate state of relaxation. Early morning yoga and stretch classes are frequently hosted in the park. It’s incredibly peaceful to stretch under the open sky surrounded by leaves before the rest of the ship wakes up.

• Scenic Strolls (Day & Night): The park completely transforms when the sun goes down. During the day, you will hear subtle sounds of nature (like chirping birds) played through hidden speakers, while at night, the sound of crickets takes over. The winding pathways are beautifully lit up in the evening, creating an incredibly romantic backdrop.

• The Central Park Garden Tour: A must-do for plant lovers. You can join a free, guided walking tour led by one of the ship’s professional onboard horticulturists. They will share all the secrets of how they keep over 20.000 plants thriving on saltwater.

• Live Music Under the Stars: At night, the park turns into an open-air concert venue. You will regularly find talented live musicians performing here, ranging from classical string quartets and smooth jazz bands to solo acoustic guitarists. You can grab a seat on one of the park benches and just soak in the music.

• High-End Shopping: Central Park is home to some of the ship's most upscale boutiques. It’s the perfect place for an evening of window shopping, featuring luxury brands like Cartier, Bulgari, or Tiffany & Co.

• Professional Photoshoots: Especially on "Formal Nights," professional photographers set up stations in the park. The beautifully lit trees and romantic pathways make it the most popular backdrop on the ship for a holiday photo.

• A Culinary Journey: While dining might not be a traditional "activity," eating here is an absolute event. Central Park houses the ship's finest specialty restaurants (like Chops Grille and 150 Central Park). For a quick, complimentary lunch, head to Park Café.

• The Trellis Bar (The Heart of the Park)

  This elegant, open-air bar is right in the middle of the lush plants and trees.

  It is the ultimate spot for people-watching. By day, it’s a peaceful sunny spot to read a book; by night, it’s a lively hub where you can sip a cocktail while listening to the nearby live music.

• Vintages (For Wine Lovers)

  If your readers enjoy a good glass of wine, they will love Vintages. This cozy, sophisticated wine bar is located right at the edge of the park. You can sit inside the warm, lounge or at a table outside on the garden terrace, enjoying fine wines paired with delicious tapas.

My experience

I’ve had the chance to experience Central Park on several Royal Caribbean ships, including the Harmony and Symphony of the Seas. It’s one of my favorite spots on board. The transition is incredible: one moment you are walking through the lively Royal Promenade with the Carousel, the Sports Bar, and the thrill of the Ultimate Abyss and the next, you step into this garden. It’s the perfect sanctuary for any mood. Honestly, there’s nothing better than enjoying a nice cocktail while sitting in the bar, surrounded by lush, green leaves. You almost forget you’re at sea!
