Silversea or Explora Journeys: Which Ultra-Luxury Cruise Line Suits You Best?

Updated: 4 days ago
When choosing a cruise in the highest echelon of luxury, you inevitably encounter two names that set the standard: the iconic Silversea and the ambitious newcomer Explora Journeys. While both cruise lines offer unparalleled luxury, the onboard experience is entirely different.
Silversea: The classic perfection
Silversea is the perfect choice for the traveler who appreciates an intimate atmosphere and impeccable service. With their 'all-inclusive' concept, including butler service for every suite, you will be completely unburdened. Their smaller ships allow them to dock in the most exclusive, hidden harbors that larger vessels simply cannot reach. It is refined, classic, and extremely personal.
Explora Journeys: The "Ocean State of Mind"
Explora Journeys, the new luxury division of the MSC Group, takes a different approach. Here, it’s all about 'Cosmopolitan Luxury.' The ships feel like a floating boutique hotel in Miami or Ibiza: modern, spacious, and with a strong focus on wellness and culinary innovation. The atmosphere is slightly less formal than Silversea, but with an unprecedented attention to design and 'space to breathe'.
About the cruise lines
Silversea: Since 2020, Silversea has been fully owned by the Royal Caribbean Group. This is the world’s second-largest cruise corporation (known for brands like Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises). Within this portfolio, Silversea is the 'crown jewel', the brand representing the absolute pinnacle of the ultra-luxury segment.
Explora Journeys: is the brand-new luxury flagship of the MSC Group. Unlike many other cruise lines, MSC remains a family-owned business (the Aponte family). Explora Journeys is their ambitious response to the demand for modern, European-chic travel, leveraging MSC’s immense maritime expertise and multi-billion-dollar global network.
Explora (part of the MSC Group) doesn't even refer to their vessels as cruise ships; they call them 'Luxury Hotels at Sea.' They are specifically targeting an audience that perhaps never considered a cruise before.
What defines these vessels?
Silversea: An Impressive and Diverse Fleet
Silversea boasts one of the most extensive fleets in the ultra-luxury segment. Their ships are divided into the 'Classic' fleet and the 'Expedition' fleet.
The classic ships carry names such as Silver Muse, Silver Moon, and Silver Dawn. Their brand-new flagships are the Silver Nova and the Silver Ray (the 'Nova Class').
Innovation: The Silver Nova and Silver Ray are groundbreaking. They feature an asymmetrical design (much more open to the sea) and are the most environmentally friendly ultra-luxury ships ever built.
Following the acquisition by the Royal Caribbean Group, Silversea gained the resources to rapidly modernize and sustain their fleet, firmly securing their position as a market leader.
Explora Journeys: The Birth of a New Legend
While Silversea boasts a rich history, Explora Journeys is quite literally writing history. The MSC Group is investing billions into this new fleet.
The names are simple and powerful: EXPLORA I, EXPLORA II, all the way through the planned EXPLORA VI.
Rapid Growth: EXPLORA I and II are already in service. Between now and 2028, four more ships will join the fleet. This represents unprecedented growth in the ultra-luxury segment.
Innovation: Starting with EXPLORA III, the ships will be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and hydrogen technology, underlining their commitment to the 'Ocean State of Mind' and the preservation of our oceans.
What do these two cruise lines have in common?
1. Unprecedented Space (Space Ratio)
With both cruise lines, you will never have to hunt for a sunbed or wait in line for a restaurant. They boast some of the highest 'space-to-guest' ratios in the industry. This translates to wide corridors, expansive decks, and lounges where you can relax in total tranquility.
2. Guest-Crew Ratio
Service is the top priority for both cruise lines. There is nearly one crew member for every guest on board. The result? A staff that knows your name, remembers your favorite drink, and discreetly anticipates your every need.
3. All-Suite Accommodations
Forget the standard cabin. At both Silversea and Explora Journeys, you stay in a suite.
All accommodations have a private veranda.
You will enjoy high-end materials, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms stocked with luxury toiletries.
4. World-Class Culinary Experience
Forget mass dining halls; instead, enjoy a variety of refined restaurants.
Dine whenever and wherever you choose (Open Seating).
The chefs use fresh, local ingredients tailored to the region where you are sailing.
Fine wines and premium spirits are included as standard with both cruise lines.
5. Destination-Focused Cruising
Both cruise lines focus heavily on the destination. They often feature extended port stays (late-night departures) or even stay for an entire night (overnights). This gives you the time to truly experience a destination like Monaco or a Norwegian fjord, even after the day-trippers have long since departed.

Key Differences Between Silversea and Explora Journeys
1. The "Vibe" on Board: Classic vs. Cosmopolitan
Silversea: This is the premier choice for lovers of traditional luxury. It evokes the 'Golden Age' of travel. The atmosphere is gallant, serene, and formal. In the evenings, you will often see gentlemen in blazers and ladies in elegant evening wear.
Explora Journeys: Here, you will find a modern-luxury lifestyle. It feels more like a stay at an Aman or Four Seasons hotel. The atmosphere is more vibrant, the design is sleeker (European chic), and the dresscode is 'Cosmopolitan Casual.' It is luxury without the stiffness.
2. Service: The Butler vs. The Host
Silversea: Renowned for their Butler Service provided for every suite. The butler is your central point of contact: from making dinner reservations to organizing a private cocktail party in your suite.
Explora Journeys: They operate with Hosts. The service is equally attentive and proactive, but less ceremonial. There is no butler to unpack your suitcases (except in the highest suite categories), but rather a team dedicated to ensuring your every need is met in an informal, friendly manner.
3. The Definition of All-Inclusive: What is Actually Included?
Silversea: Aims for total peace of mind. With their 'Door-to-Door' fare, almost everything is covered: private transfers from your home to the airport, flights, drinks, gratuities, and often a selection of included excursions in every port.
Explora Journeys: Focuses on culinary and social freedom. While drinks, gratuities, and high-speed Wi-Fi are included, flights and excursions (their 'Destination Experiences') are chosen and paid for separately. This offers more flexibility for travelers who prefer to make their own arrangements or travel to the port by private means.
4. Size and Destinations
Silversea: Boasts a large fleet of relatively small ships (300 to 700 guests) alongside dedicated expedition vessels. This allows them to navigate the narrowest bays and reach the most remote areas of the world, such as Antarctica or the Amazon.
Explora Journeys: The ships are slightly larger (approximately 900 guests). While they still maintain a very intimate feel, their size allows for greater culinary variety, offering up to 6 to 9 different dining venues and more extensive wellness facilities.

Cruising Regions & Destinations
Silversea: Renowned for its extraordinary reach. Thanks to smaller ships and a specialized expedition fleet, they visit destinations that others can only dream of.
Expeditie-reizen: They are the market leader in luxury expeditions to Antarctica, the Galápagos Islands, and the Arctic regions.
Verborgen parels: In the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, they dock in intimate, boutique ports like Portofino or St. Barths, placing you right in the heart of the destination.
Wereldreizen: For the true adventurer, Silversea offers extensive World Cruises that span all seven continents.
Explora Journeys: Focuses less on the extreme corners of the globe and more on lifestyle destinations that align with their modern hotel vibe.
Langer in de haven: They prioritize longer stays and overnights in popular, chic cities such as Ibiza, Mykonos, Saint-Tropez, or Reykjavik.
Focus op Europa en Amerika: Currently, the emphasis is strongly on the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Caribbean, with itineraries perfectly suited for lovers of culture, gastronomy, and design.
Wereldreizen: Starting in 2028, EXPLORA II will embark on its first World Cruise, spanning 140 days bookings are now open.
My Personal Experience: On Board Explora Journeys
I had the opportunity to experience firsthand what the ‘Ocean State of Mind’ of Explora Journeys truly means. After many cruises with my family, I can sincerely say: this is in a class of its own. It is a fantastic experience that I highly recommend to anyone who loves tranquility, space, and refined dining.
What stayed with me the most? The personal attention to the little things. Think of your favorite coffee, served in the morning exactly the way you like it. Or the buffet, which is so extensive and high-quality that it exceeds every expectation. But perhaps the best part was the reaction of our teenagers. They had the time of their lives and now want nothing else. To me, that says everything about the versatility and the accessible luxury of this cruise line.
