For many cruise enthusiasts, certain ships just hold a special place in our hearts. But for me, the Legend of the Seas isn’t just a ship, she is where my story began. She was the very first ship I ever stepped aboard, serving as a proud member of the Cruise Staff.

Right now, in August 2026, the Legend of the Seas is officially making her grand debut as Royal Caribbean's newest Icon-class mega-ship.

But as we look forward to the future of this new giant, we can never forget the epic pioneer that started it all.

I would love to take you on a trip down memory lane to remember this legendary, groundbreaking ship, before we fast-forward to see exactly what is waiting for us in the very near future!

Two iconic ships with completely different missions: one a classic globetrotting world traveler, the other a modern marvel where the ship itself is the destination.

The Old Legend of the Seas

Built in 1995 at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in France, the original Legend of the Seas was a revolutionary masterpiece. Made for the Royal Journeys, which took the passengers all around the globe, back then, she was the ultimate globe-trotting superstar of modern naval architecture.

THEN: The Revolutionary "Ship of Light"

When Royal Caribbean introduced Legend of the Seas in the mid-nineties, she was a masterpiece of modern naval architecture. While she might seem intimate compared to today's mega-resorts, back then, she was the pinnacle of elegance and innovation.

  • The Vision: She was famously dubbed the "Ship of Light" because she featured over two acres of glass. The massive walls of windows in the public areas brought the ocean directly to the guests, creating an incredibly bright, open, and airy atmosphere.

  • The Wow-Factor: Who remembers the spectacular 7-story Centrum? With its glass elevators, brass accents, and vibrant 90s neon touches, stepping into that atrium felt like stepping into the future of cruising.

  • A True Globetrotter: Legend wasn't tied down to one region. She was built for speed, allowing her to become Royal Caribbean's ultimate globetrotter, sailing everywhere, the so called Royal Journeys:from Alaska and the Mediterranean to Asia and Australia.

NOW: The Modern Discovery

Fast forward to today. While Royal Caribbean eventually parted ways with the ship in 2017, her story was far from over. A ship with this much character doesn't just disappear.

Today, she is still sailing proudly under the flag of Marella Cruises (part of the TUI group) as the Marella Discovery in the Mediterranean Sea.

  • The Transformation: Marella gave the ship a massive, multi-million-pound makeover to fit the modern British cruise market. The bright 90s neon and heavy patterns were swapped for a contemporary, stylish, and relaxed boutique-hotel vibe.

  • Upgraded Luxuries: While her iconic structure and beautiful glass walls remain, the interior has been completely refreshed. She now boasts modern features like a rock-climbing wall, an outdoor cinema under the stars, and updated contemporary dining venues.

  • The Spirit Lives On: What makes Marella Discovery so special is that she kept the exact elements that made her a legend in the first place, the incredible amount of natural light, the wrap-around promenade deck, and that perfect, intimate ship size where you never feel lost.

The New Legend of the Seas

Meanwhile at the Meyer shipyard in Turku Finland, the brand new Legend of the Seas is entering the final stages of construction, almost ready to make her grand debut.

She is a completely different ship. While the original 1995 pioneer was a sleek, fast globetrotter built to span the world, this new icon-class giant is designed to be a destination itself. Instead of just a ship, she is a vibrant, living village on the ocean.

What the New Legend is Known For:

  • The Ultimate Waterpark at Sea: She will feature Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea, complete with six record-breaking waterslides, including an open-freefall slide and family raft slides.

  • The Aquadome: Perched at the very top of the ship, this massive glass dome is a tranquil oasis with 220-degree ocean views by day, and a high-tech theater featuring Olympic-level divers, synchronized swimmers, and a dramatic robotic waterfall by night.

  • 8 Distinct Neighborhoods: Instead of just decks, the ship is split into themed neighborhoods. This includes Surfside, a dedicated area built completely for young families, and Central Park, a lush, open-air park filled with thousands of real, living plants and upscale dining.

  • The Crown’s Edge: Part skywalk, part ropes course, and part thrill ride, this attraction tests guests' bravery by letting them swing 154 feet above the ocean.

How the New Legend Stands Out from other Icon-Class Ships

While she shares the same groundbreaking DNA, Legend is carving out her own identity. Royal Caribbean is stepping away from the bright, tropical themes of her predecessors to give Legend a more mystical, adventure-driven personality.

Beyond a completely fresh interior design and new color palettes in iconic areas like Central Park, she will debut exclusive, never-before-seen specialty restaurants, unique bar concepts, and brand-new entertainment lineups in the AquaDome and the ice arena. She is the ultimate, refined evolution of the Icon class.

  • Exclusive Entertainment & Shows: Legend will debut completely new, custom-produced Broadway-style shows in the Royal Theater and brand-new, high-tech ice-skating spectacles in Absolute Zero. The AquaDome will also feature a brand-new diving show specifically choreographed for this ship.

  • New Dining & Bar Concepts: Royal Caribbean always introduces new culinary concepts on their third ship. While she will keep favorites like the Pearl Café and Basecamp, Legend will feature newly themed bars, a fresh specialty restaurant concept, and unique nightlife venues that you won't find on Icon or Star.

  • Refined Neighborhood Details: The open-air Central Park and the Royal Promenade on Legend will have their own distinct design tweaks, color palettes, and specialty boutiques, giving the ship a completely unique "street style" compared to her sisters.

Conclusion

Whichever way you choose to cruise, we will never forget where it all started. The Legend of the Seas is simply an icon, whether you are looking at the ground-breaking pioneer of 1995 or the massive modern marvel of today.

Memories at sea stay with you for life. The original Legend of the Seas completely changed my life, and she will always hold a legendary place in my heart.
