I wrote this blog because I have been on both ships with my family, and I can tell you first-hand that they are both absolutely great for families! However, they each have their own unique standouts and differences. In this ultimate comparison, we are putting the massive Harmony of the Seas side-by-side with the thrilling NCL Escape. From top-deck water parks and high-energy parades to the absolute freedom of Freestyle Cruising, I would like to lay it all out for you, so you can see which ship suits your family the best for your next dream cruise.
Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas
To understand what makes Harmony of the Seas so special for families, you first have to look at her incredible scale. As part of Royal Caribbean’s groundbreaking Oasis Class, she is quite literally a floating city. The ship is uniquely divided into seven distinct neighborhoods, each with its own vibe and personality.
One of the biggest eye-catchers on board is the Central Park, a lush open-air neighborhood featuring over 12,000 live plants and trees where you can walk under the open sky in the middle of the ocean. For families, the heartbeat of the ship is The Boardwalk, designed like a nostalgic seaside pier complete with a carousel, arcade games, and the jaw-dropping AquaTheater at the very back of the ship.
Whether your family loves high-energy Broadway productions, ice-skating at sea, or plunging down the Ultimate Abyss, the tallest dry slide at sea, Harmony is built to deliver that massive, jaw-dropping "wow-factor" from the moment you step on board.
Construction Period: It took nearly 3 years to build. The first steel was cut in September 2013, and she officially entered service in May 2016.
The Shipyard: She was built at the famous Chantiers de l'Atlantique. shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France (one of the largest shipyards in the world).

The AquaTheater (Diving & Acrobatics): Located at the back of the Boardwalk, you will find the AquaTheater with shows like The Fine Line and Hideaway Heist, world-class Olympic divers, synchronized swimmers, and high-flying acrobats plunge from 30-foot platforms under the stars. It is an absolute jaw-dropper for kids and adults alike.
Studio B (The Ice Rink): Yes, a real ice skating rink in the middle of the ocean! You can watch professional ice shows like 1887: A Journey in Time which features high-tech projection mapping and stunning choreography. My experience
Both ships are fantastic for family vacations or for people who like a bit of life onboard. Although Royal Caribbean stands out with its big ships, their shows are truly next level, there is simply no comparison with any other cruise line. They are jaw-dropping and offer so much variety, from aqua shows and ice-skating to full Broadway productions.
We also really enjoyed Norwegian Cruise Line's Escape because of the amazing ropes course. With its different levels, both kids and parents can have a lot of fun together. They are both outstanding cruise lines, each in their own way. Whichever you choose, you are guaranteed a fantastic cruise with lots of activities onboard!
