The Explora Journeys

Family & Their Heritage

The story of Explora Journeys doesn't begin at the drawing board of a modern corporate office, but in Sorrento, Italy. The Aponte family is inextricably linked to the sea, with a maritime history dating back to the 17th century. However, it was Captain Gianluigi Aponte who laid the foundation for today’s empire in 1970 when he founded the MSC Group. What started with just a single second-hand cargo ship, the Patricia (named after his wife), grew to become the largest shipping company in the world.

At the heart of the company lies MSC Cargo, which has grown to become the largest container shipping line in the world. With hundreds of mega-containerships sailing the oceans day and night, the family possesses an unparalleled level of maritime expertise and infrastructure.

But the group is far broader than just cargo and cruises. The empire consists of various specialized companies that strengthen one another, including:

  1. MSC Cargo: The absolute global leader in container shipping.

  2. MSC Cruises: The contemporary cruise line tailored for modern vacationers and a broad audience.

  3. Medlog & TiL: The logistics arm and the management of global port terminals.

  4. GNV & SNAV: Key players in European ferry connections.

  5. MSC Air Cargo: The recent expansion into air freight transportation.

  6. Explora Journeys: The cruise line operating in the ultra-luxury segment.

Operationing these six major sectors under one flag gives the Aponte family the financial leverage and operational knowledge to establish a completely unique experience with Explora Journeys.

While most cruise ships are designed by external agencies, the family's personal touch is palpable throughout Explora Journeys. Alexa Aponte Vago, Gianluigi’s daughter, played a pivotal role in the design of the ships. Her personal taste and meticulous eye for detail ensure that the vessels do not feel like standard hotels, but rather like a sophisticated European home at sea.

Explora Journeys is the ultimate crown on the Aponte family's legacy. It is the realization of a long-cherished dream: creating a luxury cruise line that blends timeless elegance with the modern demands of the mindful traveler.

Ocean State of Mind

What sets Explora Journeys apart from a traditional luxury cruise? The Aponte family’s answer is the 'Ocean State of Mind.' This concept is the common thread through everything you experience on board. It is a mindset focused on tranquility, space, and a deep connection to the sea. Explora offers an environment where time itself seems to slow down. But what does that mean for you as a guest in reality? The Ocean State of Mind translates into three key pillars:

  1. The Luxury of Space: With one of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the industry, the ship never feels busy. Whether you're sitting in a lounge or spending the afternoon by one of the multiple pools, you will always find a place to enjoy the journey in total privacy.

  2. Freedom of Choice: Forget fixed dining times or rigid schedules. The Ocean State of Mind means you are the one who decides what your day looks like. Whether you wish to enjoy a late breakfast on your private terrace or spontaneously dine at one of the sophisticated restaurants, the choice is entirely yours.

  3. Connecting with the Ocean: The vessels are designed so that you never lose sight of the water. With soaring windows, massive outdoor spaces, and ocean-front suites that all boast a private terrace, the ultimate goal is for you to feel the spirit of the sea at all times.

At Explora Journeys, luxury is not about outward display, but about how you feel. It is a refined, European way of traveling where relaxation and discovery go hand in hand.

The Fleet

Explora Journeys is expanding with a total of six ships on the horizon. Although they look identical at the first sight, with the deep blue hull and sleek, elegant lines, there are major technological evolutions between the generations. Let's take a closer look at what connects them and what sets them apart.

The Similarities

  • Intimate Scale: With approximately 460 suites (all ocean-front with private terraces), the atmosphere remains wonderfully personal.

  • Guest-to-Crew Ratio: A ratio of 1.25 to 1, guaranteeing an unprecedented level of intuitive service.

  • The Design: The signature 'Homes at Sea' mindset, making the suites feel like sophisticated luxury apartments instead of cruise cabins.

The Differences

The real shift comes with Explora III, which officially entered service this summer of 2026.

  • Sustainable Fuel: While Explora I and II operate on traditional (yet cleaner) marine fuels, Explora III is the first vessel in the fleet powered by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). This significantly reduces environmental emissions.

  • Dimensions: To accommodate the larger LNG storage tanks, the ship was lengthened by 19 meters. This extra space has been cleverly utilized to make the public areas feel even more expansive and open.

  • Explora IV and V: These upcoming sister ships will follow the technology of Explora III and will also be fully powered by LNG.

Hydrogen and the Future of Green Energy

The evolution continues beyond LNG. Explora V and Explora VI (planned for 2027 and 2028) are set to push boundaries even further. These ships will utilize hydrogen fuel cell technology, enabling them to achieve zero emissions while docked in port. The engines can be completely shut down, yet every luxury amenity on board will keep running smoothly, powered entirely by green energy.

Visual Innovation: The New Heart of Explora III

Although timeless elegance flows through the entire fleet, Explora III introduces a clear visual shift from her sister ships. The most noticeable transformation is located right at the heart of the ship: the Atrium.

While Explora I and II feature a beautiful yet more compact atrium, Explora III introduces a much more open and light-filled design. Thanks to the ship’s 19-meter extension, the space has been given literal breathing room. The Atrium serves even more as a vibrant social hub, complete with a spectacular spiral staircase and a reimagined layout of the surrounding lounges and bars. It feels grander, reminiscent of a luxury hotel lobby in Paris or Milan, but with that indispensable view of the sea.

What About the Suites?

You might wonder if a longer ship means more guests. However, the Aponte family has stayed entirely faithful to their commitment to intimacy.

  • Explora I & II: Home to 461 Oceanfront Suites.

  • Explora III & IV: Even with the extra meters in length, the suite count remains practically unchanged at around 461 suites.

Why is this important? It means the bonus space created by extending the hull wasn't used to increase passenger capacity. Instead, the family chose to invest that space in:

  • Larger Public Spaces: Such as the reimagined atrium and more expansive restaurants.

  • Technological Innovation: Making the necessary room for the state-of-the-art LNG fuel tanks.

  • Enhanced logistics: Designed to ensure the personalized service flows even more seamlessly.

In essence, this means that on board Explora III, you enjoy even more square footage of ship per guest than on the first two vessels.

The Destinations

Explora Journeys’ itineraries are mindfully designed for travelers who wish to discover the world without feeling rushed. While traditional cruise lines often depart at 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM, Explora chooses a completely different approach:

  • Overnights & Late-Night Departures: The ships frequently remain in port until late in the evening or even overnight. This grants you the opportunity to dine at a local restaurant in Saint-Tropez or truly experience the magic of a sunset in Reykjavik.

  • Unique Ports of Call: Thanks to the ships' intimate dimensions, they can access boutique ports that remain out of reach for mega-cruise liners. Think hidden gems in the Mediterranean, secluded Norwegian fjords, or intimate bays tucked away in the Caribbean.

World Journey

For those who truly have the luxury of time, Explora Journeys offers an experience that exceeds all expectations with their World Journey. In 2029, Explora I will sail across multiple continents, visiting an impressive 63 unique destinations over the course of 128 days. The focus here is entirely on depth and tranquility. This is not a race around the globe, but a meticulously curated itinerary designed to let you truly immerse yourself in the culture, gastronomy, and natural beauty of diverse continents.

One of the brand's greatest strengths is the ability to easily combine multiple cruises, a concept known in the industry as 'Back-to-Back' sailing. The itineraries are mindfully designed to connect seamlessly without repeating ports of call. You only have to unpack your suitcase once, allowing you to enjoy the comfort of your own familiar suite while the world effortlessly unfolds outside your window.

Many routes are designed to connect effortlessly, ensuring you never visit the same harbor twice. This comes with major benefits:

  • No Repetition: For example, you could spend a week sailing through the Greek Islands and seamlessly extend your journey with a week along the Adriatic Coast, without ever visiting the same city twice.

  • Ultimate Convenience: You only have to unpack your suitcase once. You get to keep your preferred suite, and by the second leg of your journey, the hosts already know your personal preferences inside out.

  • True Depth: It is the ideal way to fully immerse yourself in an entire region over 14 or 21 days, allowing you to deeply explore rather than just catching a fleeting glimpse.

The Future

The ambition of Explora Journeys extends far beyond their current fleet. The Aponte family has a crystal-clear vision in mind: a fleet that is not only the most luxurious but also one of the most environmentally friendly in the world. The journey toward a zero-emission future has officially begun, and the blueprints for the coming years are nothing short of impressive.

Explora V & VI: The Hydrogen Revolution

While Explora III and IV already take a significant step forward with LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), Explora V and Explora VI (scheduled for 2027 and 2028) represent the true technological breakthrough. These vessels will be equipped with a new generation of engines powered by hydrogen.

  • Zero Emissions in Port: Thanks to this cutting-edge hydrogen technology, these vessels can power all onboard amenities while the main engines are completely shut off. This means the ship can rest in port in total silence, with absolutely zero emissions.

  • Reduced Environmental Impact: This innovation significantly cuts greenhouse gas emissions, which is crucial for preserving the fragile destinations the cruise line visits.

The future vision of the MSC Group extends far beyond the sixth Explora vessel. The company continuously invests in pioneering technologies, such as reducing underwater noise pollution to protect marine life and implementing advanced systems for wastewater management.

For travelers, this makes choosing Explora Journeys a conscious and rewarding decision. You experience ultimate luxury at its finest, with the peace of mind that the company is investing in the future to protect the world's oceans for the generations that follow us.

Conclusion

Explora Journeys is far more than just a new name on the ocean; it is the realization of a generations-old family passion, beautifully translated into cutting-edge technology and the most refined hospitality. Whether you choose to step aboard the innovative Explora III this summer, or dream of a hydrogen-powered world cruise in the future the 'Ocean State of Mind' is waiting for you.

My Personal Experience

Having had the privilege of experiencing multiple cruises with Explora Journeys myself, I can genuinely say that this cruise line perfectly aligns with the chapter I am in today. Experiencing this level of unprecedented luxury, finding complete tranquility, and receiving such deeply personal attention onboard is exactly what I look for in a journey right now.

It is a beautiful evolution. In the past, as a family, we often chose the larger, more active ships filled with endless entertainment and 'fun' for the children. But as needs change over time, we now choose for complete relaxation. We intensely enjoy the high-end gastronomy and the exceptional destinations we visit.

Discovering ports we’ve never visited before, combined with that exclusive 'yacht-like feel' throughout the ship, allows us to completely unwind. And while children are certainly welcome at Explora Journeys, bringing a delightful vibrancy during the summer months, they never overwhelm the experience. The serene atmosphere and focus on quality always take center stage. For us, this has become the new standard of cruising.

With this cruise line, everything revolves around the details. Think of the personal recognition from the crew, who will know your name after just a few days, and a level of service that is simply memorable. Inside your suite, you are surrounded by pure sophistication: a genuine walk-in wardrobe, underfloor heating in the bathroom, a Dyson hairdryer, and a chilled bottle of champagne awaiting your arrival. Even your private minibar is fully customized to match your personal taste.

The luxury seamlessly extends to the outdoors. Your private terrace features a plush lounge sofa, while by the pool, thick, oversized bath towels await you on exceptionally comfortable daybeds.

And the culinary experience? It is truly of a caliber I have rarely seen elsewhere. The Emporium Marketplace elevates the traditional buffet, offering everything your heart desires, crafted with the finest and freshest ingredients. For coffee connoisseurs, Café Crema on deck 5 is a sanctuary; here, you can enjoy an endless array of specialty coffees and exquisite snacks throughout the day. It is the perfect spot to slow down and lose yourself in the ocean views.
