Cruise check-in

Remember the good old days when you had to bring a whole stack of papers to the terminal on embarkation day? When check-in took ages and you spent half your morning waiting in long, slow-moving lines before you could finally step on board? Those procedures may have been part of the adventure, but they were definitely long and often a little boring.

Luckily, things have changed. These days, boarding a cruise ship is smoother, faster, and far more relaxed. The moment you book your cruise, the fun really begins. With online check-in, digital documents, and streamlined terminal processes, you’re well on your way before you even leave home.

Choosing entertainment, restaurants and excursions

When it comes to personalizing your cruise experience: booking shows, reserving specialty restaurants, or arranging shore excursions, the rules vary depending on the cruise line. Some allow you to start as soon as you book, while others open reservations only after your cruise is fully paid.

In general, the earlier you book, the better your chances of securing the best dining times, popular excursions, and prime seats for onboard shows. So, once your cruise is confirmed, it’s a good idea to check each cruise line’s policies and start planning your dream itinerary.

App Check-In

The app check-in has made boarding a cruise ship much easier. The simplest way is to download your cruise line’s app to your smartphone and create an account. You can usually start the check-in process 30 to 60 days before departure, depending on the cruise line. Once you complete the app check-in, you can select a time slot to board the ship, making the process smooth and efficient for everyone.

The app will guide you step by step through the required procedures. After filling out all the necessary information, some cruise lines will provide you with a QR code that allows for fast and easy boarding. If everything is completed from home, your time at the terminal will be minimal, letting you get on board and start enjoying your cruise almost immediately.

Embarkation day at the terminal

Finally, the day has arrived, your cruise is about to begin! Excitement is in the air, and it’s time to get everything in order at the terminal.

Here’s what to expect when you arrive:

  1. Drop off your luggage: Make sure your suitcases have the luggage tags you received during check-in. The staff will take them and have them delivered directly to your cabin, so you don’t have to carry them onboard.

  2. Go through security: Just like at an airport, you’ll go through a security checkpoint. Bags are scanned, and you may need to show identification.

  3. Head to the check-in desk: Even if you completed app check-in, you’ll usually stop at the desk to show your documents, receive your cruise card, and confirm your boarding time. Once that’s done, you’re officially ready to board!

Suite guests

If you’re staying in a suite, you’ll enjoy an extra level of convenience. After passing through security, suite guests usually have a separate check-in area where the process is handled quickly. From there, you can relax in a private waiting area, enjoy a drink, and have some light snacks. When it’s time, your butler or onboard host will personally guide you onto the ship, making boarding seamless and stress-free.

River cruise

Check-in on a river cruise is much faster and simpler than on an ocean cruise. Since there’s no luggage drop-off or security checkpoint, you can usually board the ship immediately. At the reception, the crew will handle your check-in and guide you directly to your cabin, so you can start enjoying your cruise right away. Incase your cabin isn't ready you can comfortably wait in the lounge on board. Here you can relax and soak in the views before you start your journey.
