I noticed there is a lot of confusion about the port of Fusina (Venice). Since 2021 the cruise ships are not allowed anymore to dock at the Venice Passenger Terminal, which was located near Piazalle di Roma. The confusion starts because there is a difference between Fusina Ro-Port and Fusina Cruise Terminal.

The Fusina Cruise Terminal opened in 2024 and before that the ships were docking in Fusina port, but they didn't handle passengers and they had to be transferred (embarkation and debarkation) to the Venice Passenger Terminal and took the passengers by boat to ships and back to Venice.

1. Where is Fusina Cruise Terminal?

  • Geographical location: on the other side of the lagoon, approximately 20–30 minutes from Venice.

  • Fusina Port is primarily an industrial port, used for cargo, logistics, and industrial operations. It is not intended for tourists or cruise passengers.

  • Fusina Cruise Terminal is a passenger terminal, specifically designed for cruise ships and ferry services. It offers services and infrastructure for travelers, such as check-in areas, transportation connections, and parking facilities.

2. How to Get to Fusina Cruise Terminal

  • Shuttle service (sometimes arranged by cruise line company).

  • Taxi / private transfer: there is no taxi rank like in Barcelona where you can simply walk outside and take a taxi. Transfers are usually arranged in advance, which is why you mainly see private vans. Taxis are allowed to access the port, but there is no designated waiting area for them.

3. Facilities at Fusina Cruise Terminal

  • Parking (a major advantage compared to the Venice Passenger Terminal)

  • Check-in area and baggage drop-off

  • Shuttles / transfers available

  • Quieter and less crowded than the Venice Passenger Terminal

4. Common Misconceptions About Fusina

  • “You arrive in Venice city center” → Not true.

  • “It’s hard to reach Venice from Fusina” → there are transfers and shuttles available, better to have it arranged in advance.

  • “There’s no infrastructure” → There is a terminal with facilities.

5. Tips for Passengers

  • Plan some extra travel time.

  • Check with your cruise line in advance whether you need to be in Fusina or Chiogga (that is outside the Lagoon of Venice).

  • Consider spending a night in Mestre or Venice to avoid stress.

  • For those arriving by car, Fusina is often the most convenient option.

RO PORT FUSINA

While I have shared all the details about the main Fusina Cruise Terminal, a frequent and stressful mistake is confusing it with the Venice Ro-Port MoS. Many smaller boutique cruise ships (like Azamara or Oceania's R-class) dock at the Ro-Port, which is a completely different location from the main terminal where the mega-ships dock.

The Ro-Port is situated in a remote, industrial area. Public transport and water taxis do not serve this dock. You must arrange private land transportation or use the official shuttles provided by your cruise line. Always double-check your cruise documents for "Venice Ro-Port" and provide your driver with the exact address: Via Autostrade del Mare, 1.

Oceania Cruises (Small Ships): Be aware if you are sailing on the Nautica, Insignia, or Sirena. These smaller "boutique" ships from Oceania are often directed to the Venice Ro-Port, the same industrial dock used by Azamara. If your ship is docked here, you will find yourself in the heart of a working port, surrounded by freight trains and industrial cranes rather than a traditional passenger terminal.

  • Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL): Larger vessels, such as the Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Gem, are frequent visitors. NCL remains one of the primary users of the Fusina terminal.

  • Celebrity Cruises: Ships like the Celebrity Constellation dock here. Due to their draft and length, the new terminal at Fusina is the only suitable location in this part of Venice to accommodate them.

  • Royal Caribbean: While many of their largest ships have transitioned to Ravenna (due to their massive size), the Royal Caribbean ships that still call on Venice will dock at the new Fusina terminal.

  • Virgin Voyages: The Resilient Lady (and other Lady-class ships) is a regular guest at Fusina. The terminal’s modern, sleek vibe perfectly complements Virgin’s brand, though the industrial commute to the pier can be a bit of a "reality check" for some guests.

  • Oceania Cruises (Large Ships): The newer, larger vessels in the Oceania fleet, such as the Vista and Allura, dock here to accommodate their higher passenger counts and size requirements.

Conclusion

  • Fusina isn’t as central as the old terminal, but it’s a practical and peaceful alternative.

  • With a bit of preparation, cruising from Fusina is easy—and even comfortable.

"Cruise lines Debarkation Letter”

A few days in to your voyage, your cruise line provides a debarkation letter asking whether you have arranged your own transfer from Fusina Cruise Terminal, or if you would like them to organize it for you. Transfers to Piazzale Roma or Venice Airport can be arranged, usually at an additional cost. This ensures a smooth disembarkation process without last-minute stress.

The biggest misunderstanding seems to be that access is pretty much only by car or transport van/bus, and making sure a pickup driver knows it's the new Fusina Cruise terminal, not the Fusina ferry terminal nor the Fusina vaporetto (and water taxi) "terminal".

I do not know how frequently taxis will be waiting when ships are docked, but several private transport companies are now specifically listing the new Fusina Cruise terminal as a drop off/pickup point. In 2025 there will be more than 100 ships at this Cruise terminal, the public transports will adjust accordingly.

Many travelers like to spend a few days in Venice before or after their cruise. If you’re looking for accommodation, check out these recommended hotels.

My personal experience

We arrived with the Explora I at the Fusina Cruise Terminal. About halfway through the cruise, we received a disembarkation letter in our suite. We needed to fill out the form and return it to Guest Relations as soon as possible. The letter is used to indicate whether you’ll need transportation during disembarkation.

We had arranged our own private driver to take us to our hotel in Mogliano. If you haven’t arranged anything, Explora can help organize a transfer for you.

We stayed at the NH Collection Venezia Grand Hotel Palazzo dei Dogi. It’s a five-star hotel located in a quiet part of Venice, with a beautiful garden, yet still very easy to reach by water taxi directly from the airport.

Hotel Gritti is very popular directly located at Canal Grande.
