Unlimited Pop Package (Minors)

Also known as soda package it replaces the Open Bar for any guest (typically children or teens) booked as guest 1 or 2 in a stateroom who is under the legal drinking age of 21.

Cost: As part of the Free at Sea promotion, the package itself is included, but you are responsible for the service charges (gratuities), which are $12.50 per person, per day.

What about the 3rd & 4th Guests in the stateroom?

A common misconception is that the Free at Sea perks apply to everyone in the stateroom. However, there are specific rules for additional guests:

  • The Standard Rule: The Free at Sea perks (like the Open Bar, Specialty Dining, and Wifi) are typically only included for Guest 1 and Guest 2 in the stateroom.

  • The 3rd & 4th Guests: If you are traveling with children or friends as the 3rd or 4th person in your cabin, they do not automatically receive the beverage or dining packages.

  • The Exception (Limited Time Offers): Occasionally, NCL runs a promotion where "3rd and 4th guests sail free" or "3rd and 4th guests receive all perks." Unless this specific promotion is active at the time of your booking, these guests will have to pay for their own drinks or soda packages separately.

Can adults choose the Soda Package instead?

A common question from non-alcoholic drinkers is whether they can swap the "Unlimited Open Bar" for the cheaper "Soda Package."

  • The Rule: If you are 21 or older (Guest 1 or 2), you cannot substitute the Open Bar for a Soda Package within the Free at Sea promotion.

  • You have two options:

    • Accept the Open Bar: Even if you only drink sodas and juices, you can keep the package. You will pay the standard beverage gratuities (approx. $21.80 - $28.50 per day depending on the ship/itinerary), but all your sodas, juices, and even non-alcoholic cocktails (mocktails) will be included.

    • Decline the Beverage Perk: You can choose to decline the beverage offer entirely when booking. In this case, you don't pay the daily gratuities, and you can purchase the Unlimited Soda Package separately for $12.50 per day (+ 20% gratuity).

Important: The "All Guests" Rule

One of the most important things to remember about Free at Sea is that it is a stateroom-wide policy.

  • The Rule: If Guest 1 chooses to accept (or decline) a specific perk, Guest 2 must do the same. You cannot have one person in the cabin on the Free at Sea Open Bar while the other person declines it to save on gratuities.

  • Why this matters: If you are traveling as a couple and one person doesn't drink alcohol, you still have to pay the daily beverage service charges for both guests if you want the perk for one of you.

  • The Only Exception: Minors, guests under 21 will automatically receive the Soda Package, even if the adults have the Open Bar.

Solo lounge

Norwegian Cruise Line is widely recognized as the industry leader for solo travelers. At the heart of this experience is the Studio Lounge, an exclusive social hub reserved only for guests staying in solo staterooms.

Complimentary Refreshments

The solo lounge is designed to be your "living room at sea."

Throughout the day, you can enjoy:

  • Specialty Coffee & Tea: High-quality coffee machines and a selection of teas are available 24/7 at no extra cost.

  • Snacks: Fresh fruit, cookies, and light bites are provided daily.

The Self-Service Taps (New Technology)

As you might notice in the lounge, NCL has introduced state-of-the-art self-service beverage stations. This is where your Free at Sea package truly shines:

  • How it works: You will see automated taps for beer, wine, and soda. To use them, you simply scan your stateroom keycard.

  • With Free at Sea: If you have the beverage package, you can tap your drink instantly. The system recognizes your "Open Bar" status, and there are no additional charges to your account.

  • Without a package: You can still use these taps, but be aware that every scan will charge the individual drink price (plus a 20% service fee) directly to your onboard bill.

Did you know? The Cruise Atelier Insider Tips

The Starbucks Factor ☕️

Did you know that specialty coffees (lattes, macchiatos, etc.) are not included in the standard Free at Sea package? If you can’t start your day without your favorite Starbucks brew, the Free at Sea PLUS upgrade offers unlimited Starbucks(one drink per visit). At roughly $6–$7 per coffee, this adds up quickly!

Starlink 🌐

This is currently the fastest internet connection at sea. The fact that NCL offers this is a major advantage compared to some of the older ships from other cruise lines.

The Haven Advantage 💎

For Haven and Suite guests: you always receive Free at Sea. While some cruise lines limit your premium drink package to the exclusive lounge, NCL’s package is valid throughout the entire ship. Whether you’re at the pool, the theater, or a specialty restaurant, your premium status follows you.

My experience

In my experience, if you enjoy a few cocktails by the pool and love exploring high-quality specialty dining, the Free at Sea package is absolutely worth it. It provides peace of mind and significantly lowers your final bill at the end of the cruise. Personally, I mostly cruise in The Haven, where this package is seamlessly integrated into the luxury experience.
