The Traditional Cruise Muster Drill
Remember the days of standing shoulder-to-shoulder in a heavy lifejacket, waiting in the heat for the mandatory safety briefing? For many, it was the one "chore" that stood between boarding and that first celebrated sip of champagne.
Those days are officially over.
Thanks to the latest smart-tech and mobile apps, the 'Muster Drill' has undergone a silent revolution. Instead of crowds and whistles, the modern safety briefing is now a seamless, individual experience that respects your most valuable asset: your vacation time.
In this blog, I’ll show you how leading cruise lines have turned a mandatory safety check into a stress-free start to your journey.
Remember the days when, shortly before departure, the announcements would echo through the ship: everyone to their muster stations. You had to go back to your stateroom, grab those bulky lifejackets, and find your assigned station, often printed on the back of your door or your keycard.
These stations used to be outside on the promenade deck, right under the lifeboats. You’d stand there in the heat of the sun, waiting for the Captain to finally announce that the drill was concluded. If you were cruising on a European ship, the safety instructions were repeated in up to five different languages, meaning you spent nearly an hour standing outside before your vacation could truly begin.
The Modern Cruise Muster Drill
Honestly, I’m glad those days are over and I don’t think anyone misses them.
Today, the process is incredibly smooth. Before even stepping foot on the ship, you can often watch the safety video from the comfort of your home or via the ship’s app on your phone. Once on board, there’s no more running around with lifejackets. You simply make a quick stop at your assigned muster station, before the ship starts sailing. The muster station is now often a comfortable lounge or a stylish restaurant, where a crew member scans your keycard to confirm your attendance.
It’s a matter of minutes, not hours. In the unlikely event of a real emergency, you go directly to your station, where the crew provides the lifejackets and guides you to the lifeboats on the promenade deck. No unnecessary back-and-forth, just a seamless transition into your vacation.
Lifejackets 2.0: Do you still need to wear one during Drill?
Having served as cruise staff myself, I’ve seen it all. I still remember the "creative" ways guests would try to put on their lifejackets, it was often quite a funny sight! We would spend the hour helping guests adjust straps and buckles to ensure everything was fitted properly. And I lost count of how many guests couldn’t resist testing the whistle on their jacket just to see if it worked.
The modern reality? You no longer need to wear that bulky orange vest during the drill. However, for your safety, you still need to know how it works.
It is simple: you slip it over your head, wrap the strap securely around your waist, and buckle it at the front. It’s a quick procedure that you can now learn through a short video in your suite or on the app, rather than practicing it in a crowded hallway.
