How the role of Cruise Staff has changed

What used to be known simply as the Cruise Staff has undergone a major transformation. On modern liners, this role is now called Activities Staff, and for a very good reason.
The days of one team doing "everything" are over. The role has been split in two because today’s mega-ships offer an incredible amount of sport activities and entertainment that require expert guidance and strict supervision.
Activities Staff: Formerly known as the Cruise Staff, they are the heartbeat of the social scene, hosting the game shows, the trivia, and those legendary theme nights like the White or Glow Party.
Sports Staff: A specialized team created to handle the adrenaline-pumping activities around the ship. Think of the complex rope courses, zip lines, massive slides, and rock-climbing walls.
The Original Cruise Staff role

In the traditional days of cruising, there was an incredible variety in their daily schedule. One moment they would be teaching a dance class, and the next they would be hosting the Captain’s Cocktail party or calling out the numbers for Bingo.
They were the constant face of the ship, moving seamlessly between high-energy sports and intimate lounge games.
Intimate Games & Socializing
Most of the "brain games" and social activities took place in cozy spots like the Schooner Bar. These were the moments where the staff really got to know the guests through activities like:
Trivia & Name That Tune: Testing the knowledge of the cruisers.
Scavenger Hunts: Getting people to explore every corner of the ship.
Creative Workshops: From the classic Towel- and Napkin Folding to the more delicate art of Origami.
Active activities & Fun
For those who wanted to stay active, the staff hosted activities outside on the deck or in the Anchors Aweigh Lounge. It wasn't about high-tech gyms back then, but about social movement:
Active activities: Starting the day with Sit to be Fit or a Walk a Mile around the deck.
Classic Deck Games: Friendly competitions of Golf Putting, Bean Bag Toss, and Ring Toss.
Dance Classes: Learning the steps for the themed nights later that evening.
The Role of the Activities Staff
While the physical and high-risk activities moved to the Sports Staff, the Activities Staff evolved into the specialized entertainment heart of the ship. Today, they are hosts, DJs, and event managers who ensure the "vibe" on board is always perfect.
What they do now
Main Stage Hosting: They don't just host trivia anymore; they host large-scale game shows in the main theater with professional lighting and sound.
Party Starters: They are the faces of the massive theme nights, like the White or Glow Party or 70s Night, leading hundreds of guests in synchronized dances.
Social Connection: Their role is now more focused than ever on social engineering, making sure guests from all over the world connect and have fun together in the lounges and poolside.
The Role of the Sport Staff

As cruise ships evolved into floating theme parks, the "Sport Staff" was born out of necessity. With the introduction of extreme activities like the Ropes Course, Zip Lines, Rock Climbing Walls, and slides, safety and supervision became the number one priority.
Unlike the Activities Staff, who focus on the "show," the Sport Staff focuses on the technical execution.

The specialized role of Sport Staff today
Safety First: They are trained in safety, harness equipment, and emergency procedures for attractions like the zip line or the ropes course.
Instruction & Coaching: Whether it's helping a guest conquer their fear on the climbing wall or giving tips on the surf simulator (FlowRider), they act as instructors.
Operational Management: They manage the complex logistics of these "thrill zones," ensuring that wait times are managed and equipment is checked daily.
Adrenaline Facilitators: They are there to make sure you have a "safe thrill."

The Sport Staff need to make sure you are secured and wear proper shoes
The creation of a dedicated Sport Staff means that the people helping you into a harness are specialists. They might not be hosting the Bingo later that night, and that’s a good thing! It allows them to focus entirely on the maintenance and safety of the incredible sports facilities on board.

My experience
Looking back at my time onboard, our main role was simple: socialize, keep the guests happy, and interact with everyone as much as possible. It was all about the personal connection.
Today, I see a clear shift in responsibilities. The Sports Staff now act more as safety marshals; their priority is ensuring activities are carried out safely, instructions are followed, and everyone is dressed properly for the activity.
The Activities Staff still focuses on interaction, but the small, intimate games we used to organize are no longer necessary. With modern cruise ships offering so much built-in entertainment, the staff’s role has evolved into hosting the 'big' favorites. You’ll still find them leading dance classes, hosting Bingo, or energizing the crowd during Karaoke and large-scale game shows
